Study of a Cottage Interior. Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923). c. 1869. Oil on board, 9 x 12 inches. A gift from Beatrice Leader to Mr & Mrs Basset, Easter 1969 (labelled verso, 'Painted by my father B. W. Leader about 1869 and presented by me to Mr and Mrs Basset. Easter 1964 - Beatrice Leader'). Courtesy of the Maas Gallery. [Click on image to enlarge it.]

According to the Maas Gallery site, “This early sketch, which belonged to Leader's daughter Beatrice, forms the background of Leader's painting at the RA of 1856, The Young Mother. The cottage was probably near to his home in Worcester.”

The Maas Gallery, London has most generously given its permission to use in the Victorian Web information, images, and text from its catalogues. The copyright on text and images from their catalogues remains, of course, with the Maas Gallery.
