Memories (Lawn Tennis) by Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921). 1889. Pastels on paper. 127 x 200 cm. (The orginal title is in English)
This work, one of the painter's most famous, seems reminiscient of two Pre-Raphaelite paintings, Burne-Jones's The Mirror of Venus, in which the ten young women do not interact with one another but are lost in reverie or longing, and Millais's Autumn Leaves, in which the young girls, all in contemporary dress, are also lost in reverie while burning leaves provide an emblem of transience.
