Commentary by Paul Crowther

The scene has been identified by Paul Crowther as a view of the Kien valley just beyond Kiental village (looking towards the Blüemlisalp massif), in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. Inchbold often worked in the Bernese Oberland between 1857 and 1860, and the picture probably dates from that time. A similar view by Ferdinand Hodler entitled Kiental mit Blüemlisalp (1902) was auctioned as Lot 232 by Beurett and Bailly of Basle, 21st June 2014.
