The Acropolis. Alfred William Hunt (1830-1896). Watercolour on paper. 240 x 370 mm (9 7/16 x 14 5/8 inches). Provenance: bought as Lot 256, Holloways, 28th September 2010. This picture was done during Hunt's first visit to Greece—probably reached in spring or summer of 1870 (in the course of a long cruise journey). The evidence for this is provided by a faint pencil rendering of the Frankish Tower in the background. The tower was demolished in 1874, before Hunt made his next visit.
