Study for “The Blind Basket-Maker with His First Child”

Michael Frederick Halliday

1864

Oil on panel

10 x 5 7/8 inches (25.4 x 14.9 cm)

Private Collection

This is the preliminary sketch for The Blind Basket-Maker with his First Child making us wonder whether this was the common practice for Halliday to make a small oil sketch in preparation for his major works. If so, none of the others are known to survive, but it was certainly a common practice amongst Victorian artists. — Dennis T. Lanigan
