Commentary by Paul Crowther

The scene is taken from Molière’s celebrated theatrical comedy, probably Act 1 Scene 5 (where Tartuffe’s appetite at supper the previous night is commented upon by the character Dorine). Egley exhibited a painting of the same title at the Royal Academy in 1857.
