(An early work)

Dry-point etching

Source: Birch, facing p.48

Nature seems stilled in this perfectly relaxed figure of a young tousle-haired, bare-foot woman, sitting on some stone steps out-of-doors. Her mood is unfathomable. She may be dejected or simply resting. But anyway, even if she is unconscious of it herself, she is beautiful. The few brambles on the bank beside her recall the legend of the Sleeping Beauty, so popular among Victorian artists.
