Henry Richard Hoare, of the famous banking family, was the only son of the second baronet, Richard Colt Hoare, of Stourhead in Wiltshire. Unfortunately, he died while his father was still alive, and left only one child, a daughter, Anne (see Burke 688). He is seen here in outdoor mode, as the expected heir of the large estate, with a glimpse of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside in the background. [Commentary continues below.]

Perhaps it was just as well that Henry did not come into the estate. According to Victoria Hutchings, he "showed little interest in anything more serious than the life of pleasure available to a well-born young man of means," and his "instability and propensity for debt" ruptured his family relationships. As it is, when his father died, Stourhead passed to his father's eldest half-brother, Henry Hugh Hoare (1762-1841), then at the helm of Hoare Bank. Already 76, Henry Hugh only survived for a few more years. But it was under his direction that the house gained its impressive portico — as planned by the original architect, Colen Campbell, but now under the supervision of the neo-classical architect Charles Parker (1799-1881).
