This early self-portrait as well as the later oil portrait of 1863 by Henry Tamworth Wells show Burton to have been a handsome distinguished looking man. Georgiana Burne-Jones in her reminiscences of her husband for the year 1865 writes: “This mention of Mr. Burton reminds me in those days we thought he much resembled Garibaldi in appearance” (Vol. I, 288). This self-portrait also exemplifies Burton’s skill as a draughtsman in graphite.
