Like Brickdale's other illustrations for the book, this one capture the mood and atmosphere rather than the specifics of the poem. The scene of young flower-gatherers surrounded by the evidence of spring does, however, match the last lines of the poem: "All will be gay when noontide wakes anew / The buttercups, the little children’s dower..."
