Santa Maria Virgo
Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Bt ARA (1833-1898)
1880
colored chalks
67 1/2 x 22 inches
Designed for Morris and Co., for St. Martin's Church, Brompton.
According to the Sotheby's Belgravia catalogue, "Morris was responsible for the colour" of the stained glass as executed. Burne-Jones colored four of the fifteen designs -- "a practice the artist used in order to convert his more attractive cartoons into independent pictures. The rest of the cartoons for Brompton are uncoloured and can be seen Carlisle Art Gallery."
