Nude Leaning on a Pedestal

J. Gibbs [?]

1875

Charcoal on laid paper

735 x 527 mm (29 x 20 3/4 inches)

Signed upper right: "June 10. 1875 / 14. hours / T. Woolner R. a / Visitor"

Written on cardboard support: "J. Gibbs. June 10 1875"

Provenance: Lot 370, Lacy Scott and Knight, 11th June, 2011

Just below the lectern, lower left (and easily mistakable for a wavy line), is the inscription "Love Tommy." Stephen Wildman has argued to our satisfaction that this is a drawing by a student at the Royal Academy Schools — subsequently signed and thence formally approved by Woolner in his capacity as Visitor to the RA Life Class.' — Paul Crowther
