Glen Downey received his Ph.D. from the University of Victoria in 1998, and previously obtained both his B.A. and M.A. from McMaster University. His primary research interests are in Victorian Literature and Culture, with an emphasis on both gender and the history and theory of games. His doctoral dissertation, "The Truth about Pawn Promotion: The Development of the Chess Motif in Victorian Fiction," examines how chess functions in Victorian narratives as a metaphor for the experiences faced by female characters in their efforts to achieve autonomy. As such, the dissertation explores issues at the various intersections of feminist Studies and Game Theory. Currently (2000), he teaches in the English Department at the University of British Columbia.
