Sir — Adverting to your reply to my departmental letter No.48 12 of the 2nd ultimo, which has been duly submitted to the Commander-in-Chief, I am directed by his Excellency to acquaint you that it is necessary you should without loss of time give public contradiction to the report in the Daily News, with respect to the very serious charge therein made against you.

2. The Commander-in-Chief considers that the explanation given in your letter of the 2nd instant is satisfactory, but I am to desire that you will forward to me a certified copy of the communication to be sent by you to the Daily News, in contra diction of the statement made concerning you by the correspondent of that public journal — I have the honor, to be, Sir, your most obedient servant,
