“Major Albrecht, the commandant of the Free State Artillery, the man who turned his two hundred men into a model corps. By birth a German, after taking part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Major Albrecht was charged by the Free State with the formation of a corps of artillery-men. He acquitted himself of his task with true German thoroughness: his corps was an example of bravery, strict performance of duty, and capacity. Major Albrecht was taken prisoner in General Cronje's surrender at Paardenberg, on the 27th of February 1900.”
