"Volunteer Sham Fight at Southend on Whit Monday." Source: Illustrated London News. 6 June 1863: 613. The report that follows explains that this gave practical experience of "resisting an army" to many volunteer detachments, including "the West Middlesex, London Artists', and other metropolitan corps," who acquitted themselves well. The report concludes that it was "a most agreeable and picturesque field-day" (622).
