he Etching Club, founded in 1838, was largely made up of Royal Academicians, including Thomas Creswick, Henry Townsend, Richard Redgrave, Charles West Cope and Thomas Oldham Barlow. William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais were elected in 1854. The Club engaged the printers Gad and Keningale to proof and edition the members’ etching plates. In their early publications members illustrated texts by authors such as Shakespeare, Milton and Thomas Gray. Etchings for the Art Union of London by the Etching Club was their most ambitious publication with thirty etchings, and was followed by A Selection of Etchings by The Etching Club in 1865.
