In her September 2019 TLS review of three books about life on the Thames and the Regent’s Canal, the wonderfully named Lamorna Ash points out that when the boat described in Caroline Crampton’s The Way to the Sea reaches “the Hoo peninsula, the landmass separating the Thames and Medway estuaries . . . [it] is met by larger waves, spray leaping over her bow, the water brackish and harsher.” For Crampton this is one of the “loneliest stretches of the estuary.” It is also its most famous; this is where the opening of Great Expectations is set.” — George P.
