
ictorian Review is currently accepting submissions for a forum on George Eliot's final novel, Daniel Deronda, to mark the 150th anniversary of its publication. Guest edited by Eliot scholar Ilana Blumberg, "Daniel Deronda at 150 Years" will appear in VR 51.2. We seek readable, engaging, and focused pieces of 1200-1500 words, inclusive of notes and works cited, and we welcome a wide range of themes, styles, and approaches, both personal and academic.
Possible topics include but are not limited to:
- The readability of Daniel Deronda as a novel of ideas
- Deronda as Eliot's response to the Jewish question
- Female extremes in Deronda
- Zionism in 1876
- Teaching Deronda today
- The nation state and religion, Christian and Jewish
- Orientalism and Deronda
- Deronda in translation
- Sadism and Deronda
- Deronda as a final novel
- The research of Judaism and Deronda
- Where is Protestantism in Deronda?
- Deronda and what lies beyond human reason
- Deronda and kinship
Proposals of 250 words should be submitted along with a 60-word author biography and one-page CV to Ilana Blumberg by September 1, 2025. We will notify applicants by September 30 and completed essays will be due January 15, 2026. We welcome contributions by scholars at all career stages.
