llie Dobson (university of Birmingham) and Joanna Turner (Loughborough University) are delighted to announce a centenary conference commemorating the life and work of Marie Corelli, who died 1924.
This one-day event will be held 4 May, 2024 at Corelli's former home, Mason Croft, Stratford-upon-Avon, and will coincide with the Stratford Literary Festival.
We invite proposals for presentations that explore various aspects of Marie Corelli's life, works, and cultural significance. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- The reception of and critical response to Corelli's works in her time and subsequently
- Corelli's social circles and their politics
- Corelli and her literary contemporaries
- Corelli's non-fiction
- Genre and form
- Gender and sexuality
- Race and ethnicity
- Space, place, and geographies
- The natural world
- Spiritual, mystical, and occult elements in Corelli's writings
- Corelli's global reach and impact on diverse literary cultures
- Film adaptations of Corelli's works
Interested participants are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 300 words for consideration, along with a brief biography of up to 100 words, via email to CommemoratingCorelli@gmail.com by 1 February 2024.
We hope that this event will bring together scholars and enthusiasts to shed new light on the literary contributions and enduring legacy of one of the most successful writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
