After his mother's death, Blackmore and his older brother were sent off to the safety and care of a younger sister of his dead wife, Mary Knight (later Gordon), who lived in the Knight family home at Nottage Court, near Porthcawl in South Wales. Blackmore later paid tribute to aunt Mary, who "taught me to speak and spell" and no doubt much more, over the first six years of his life. [DRB]
