The Annunciation

Chancel window, south-east

St. Martin's Church, Low Marple, nr Stockport

This window shows the Angel Gabriel in traditional stance, one hand raised, the other holding a leafy stem (traditionally, a stem of lilies), and Mary, with long golden hair, listening intently with a (presumably) devotional book in one hand. There are rosebushes and lush fruit-trees in the background, and flowers stud the grass below. In the quatrefoil at the top of the tracery lights is a chalice.

Photograph and caption material by Michael Critchlow, who provided the information from the church notes; text and formatting by Jacqueline Banerjee.
