"Truth and the Life"

Designer: Arthur Louis Duthie

Maker: James Powell & Sons

South Transept (middle right), Romsey Abbey, Hampshire

1892

This completes the pair of windows here in memory of the Hon. Ralph Dutton, Conservative MP for South Hampshire, who died in 1892. In John 14: 6, Jesus said "I am the way the truth and the life," and here he is seen after the crucifixion, breaking bread with two disciples he met on the road to Emmaus. As in the adjacent window, the face of the disciple on the right is that of Dutton himself.

Orders for the south transept windows at this time can be found in the Powell Order Book (e.g. "2-1l, S trans 5599/441"), with the name "Duthie." Arthur Lewis Duthie, who died in 1940, was a designer of note, who wrote books on church decoration and decorative glasswork, the latter (Decorative Glass Processes, 1908), including an account of Powell's opus sectile work.
