Three mosaic scenes from the life of Christ in Keble College Chapel designed by William Butterfield: (a) The Annunciation to Mary. (b) The The Nativity (or Adoration). (c) The Baptism of Christ In the Nativity scene, the Angels hold a banner proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest — On earth peace and good will toward men.” According to St. Paul, John the Baptist's baptism of Jesus is fulfillment of Moses Striking the Rock. Ecclesiastical stained glass, such as that in Jesus College, Oxford, frequently pairs the two situations, the type and antitype or fulfillment. (Antitype does not mean, as one might think, a contra- or against-type but its fulfillment.) [Click on the image to enlarge it.]
