The Signal-Man

Wood engraving

Framed, 14 x 9.2 cm

Facing page 190, in The Illustrated Library Edition of Dickens's Works, Christmas Stories, vol. 2.

Green has selected for illustration the interview between the gentlemanly observer known as "Barbox Brothers" and the railway functionary who seems to be suffering some sort of emotional breakdown in Chapter 4, "No. 1 Branch Line: The Signal-Man" in Mugby Junction, the framed tale for 1866 by Charles Dickens and other All the Year Round staffers writing in company.
