Unlike Woodville's other illustrations of the holiday that appeared in the newspaper’s Christmas number, this one is not obviously set in the Empire. It was accompanied by a brief poem whose authorship is not given (see below).

Would you keep Yule in the old way,
Make it a rule once every day
The Clerk of the Weather to beg, soft and low —
“At Christmas pray mantle the landscape in snow."

Should he comply (wonder untold!)
Forth you must hie, scorning the cold,
And tracking the forest and spuming the drifts,
Lay axe to the ﬁr that will blossom with gifts.
