Tailpiece: Count Gambabella
W. M. Thackeray
1855
Wood engraving, probably by William Linton
7.1 cm high by 3.8 cm wide (2 ⅝ by 1 ¾ inches), vignetted
Twentieth illustration for Thackeray’s The Rose and The Ring, p. 330.
Thackeray deploys only one illustration in Chapter 7, and seems to use the forward motion of the courtier to point the reader towards the next chapter, when Angelica will finally get to meet the handsomne, accomplished Crown Prince of Crim Tartary, a possible suitor. Descriptive headline: "Flourish Trumpets! Rattle Drums!" (330).
