The skeleton (or death’s head) makes this image of happy vacationers eager for ship and railway excursions a comment on recent horrific disasters, such as the collision between the Princess Alice and the Bywell Castle, near Woolwich, in 1875, which resulted in the deaths of more than 600 excursionists, many of them children.
