The context of the illustration

Marian, Ellen’s maid, who is unaware that her mistress has visitors, within earshot talks to Ellen’s child in such a way to reveal that the unmarried woman is a mother. The kind Richard Markham, the hero of the entire novel, and the evil rector, Reginald Tracey, both act with sympathy, but Tracey plots the young mother’s seduction. [Volume 2, Chapter 145, “Hypocrisy”]
