Commentary

The King (center) takes snuff from Sir Thomas Bellair's (left) snuff-box. The King's undeserved Garter is prominently displayed on his right thigh. Both men’s stiff Baroque-era coats and the king’s long waistcoat are elaborately decorated. The left background area of the room is concealed by a folding screen, perhaps emphasizing the text’s theme of concealed motives, identities, and political truth.
