Commentary

The three women in the plate are inconsistent with the Lever letter-press, for the guests that Peter Barrington entertains are always few in number and masculine in gender. There are, however, three female characters associated with the "The Fisherman's Home" in the latter stages of the novel: Dinah Barrington, her niece Josephine Barrington, and the doctor's daughter, Polly Dill, who manages the house and garden when the Barringtons are away collecting their son's daughter from the Convent of Bramaigne on the banks of the Meuse in north-west France. Thus, the artist's including three female figures in the illustration points to a date of composition relatively late in the February 1862-January 1863 serialisation.
