Illuminated headpieces for "The Monk" and "The Désobligeant" — Johannot's decorative headpieces for the "Calais" section in Sterne's A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy, 1857 edition, published by Willoughby, 26 Smithfield, London. Wood-engravings, 3.8 and 4.3 cm high by 8.2 cm and 88 wide respectively, pages 10 and 11, vignetted. Eighth and ninth illustrations. Such artistic elaboration of the initial section of the novel befits a standard work from the previous century.
