Passage Illustrated: Yorick contemplates the Droits d'aubaine

I went straight to my lodgings, put up half a dozen shirts and a black pair of silk breeches, — “the coat I have on,” said I, looking at the sleeve, “will do.” ["Calais," p. 1]

Commentary

The book-lined closet suggest that the room is in Yorick's own lodgings in London, rather than in the inn at Calais. The illustrators have juxtaposed this scene of the clergyman's hurriedly packing with scene of Calais main square (p. 3). Tony Johannot in the 1857 edition concocted a delicate and highly ornate filigree silver frame for the portrait of Eliza.
