The Departure of Hagar and Ishmael. Artist: Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Engraver: Steinbrecher. The German title translated is “The Departure of Ishmael and His Mother.” Source: Die Bibel in Bildern, Plate 27. The version of this plate in the 1851 Art-Journal (see link below) seems slightly cruder in execution, and several of the leaves hanging in the doorway in the later version are missing as is the engraver’s name in the lower right corner. Other changes include the the young boy’s expression and the much greater simplification of folds and shadows on Hagar’s dress in the Art-Journal. Click on image to enlarge it.

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. [Genesis 21: 14; King James Bible]
