“Look, Geoffrey! That's lady Emily Tomlinson. Isn't she pretty?”

“Yes. And I suppose that's Lord Emily walking with her!”

The five figures in this cartoon serve as a fashion plate that shows what wealthy, fashionable Victorians wore, or were supposed to wear, at the seaside. The little boy wears a sailor suit with beeches and long stockings rather than bellbottoms, and both of the men in the picture also wear beeches and long stockings — the remains of eighteenth-century male costume. The woman walking alongside the man in the foreground wears late-nineteenth-century costume together with a very long handled parasol and a fancy flowered hat. The man standing close to the waves holds his walking stick behind him parallel to the ground.
