This right panel of Boucher’s cartoon so obviously intended to invoke intense dislike of Russia depicts a dreamy Tzar holding a sacred heart and palm to his chest. Meanwhile in the left panel a brutal Cossack with whip in one hand and pike in the other stands over a cowering female figure representing Poland. Across his chest the bearded ruffian wears a sash stating he is a “Holy Russian Apostle,” and the sack on his hip adorded with chains is labelled “The Gospel according to the Cossacks.”
