The Sportsman. 24 Cambridge Street, City Centre, Sheffield S1 4HP. Probably mid-nineteenth century. Painted red brick and stone. The original building, which may not have housed a pub, would have looked like one on its right in the photograph below.
This photograph gives an idea of the appearance of many commercial streets in Sheffield before the greater prosperity of the last third of the nineteenth century saw the construction of both five-story brick buildings, such as those on Pinstone Street, and elaborate classical revival ones faced in ashlar. The red brick of these buildings, like those of Manchester and other industrial cities, would have been so covered with soot that they appeared coal black.
