Brick diapering on the Bishop's Palace

Ely Cathedral

Late fifteenth century

Ely, Cambridgeshire

This is on the east tower of the old Bishop's Palace, originally connected to the Galilee Porch by a gallery. On this wall can also be seen a tripartite niche with intricate but badly weathered stone carving. It is interesting to see where the Victorians found their inspiration for this kind of brickwork (see, for example, the brickwork patterning on the wall of Windsor and Eton Riverside Station, opened in 1849).
