“A church, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, has been erected for Roman Catholic worship in Patrick-street, Cork. This building, from the designs of the late Mr. Pugin, is one of the finest recent specimens of ecclesiastical architecture in Ireland. Unfortunately, the exterior is at present almost entirely surrounded by houses, and cannot be seen to advantage.” [Continued below]

“The interior is finished, with the exception of the great altar, which has not yet been put up; but the two side altars and all the decorative sculptures are fixed in their places. In September last, with a view to the early completion of the church, a meeting of the subscribers and congregation, presided over by Bishop Delany, was held in the building itself, to discuss the best means of raising the money required for the work still to be done, and for paying off the debt of nearly £7000, which has been incurred by this costly undertaking. A statement was then made by the Very Rev. Canon Murphy, the principal priest of this church, showing that the total expenditure, so far, had been £10,455 on the building account; while the incidental account — which meant the charges for things which were necessary to be procured, but which had not any connection with the building itself — amounted to £2940 11s. 2d. From the treasurer's account it appeared that in seven years they had received £9170 in weekly collections; and the remainder of the fund was made up by special donations or bequests, annual subscriptions, and the proceeds of the annual bazaar; but they had been obliged to borrow £4337, which should be paid before they opened the church; and some other items of expenditure would increase the sum required to £6685.”
