The Bell claims to date from about 1460, but is thought to be "basically C16" (Nairn and Pevsner 206). It is no surprise to see from above the entrance that it was "an Old Coaching Inn known locally as "The Crooked House," or, from the local area's conservation report, that it was the haunt of highwaymen (see p.4). More surprising perhaps is the fact that it was used as the town's first post office, from about 1880 —

Definitely a crooked house!
