The Potocki Mausoleum. designed by Henryk Marconi (1792-1863). 1834-36. [Click on this image to enlarge it.] Located some ten kilometres from Warsaw’s city centre, in the park leading to Wilanów Palace (sometimes called the “Polish Versailles”), this magnificent Mausoleum, modelled on the Tomb of the Scipios, was dedicated to Count Stanislaw Kostka Potocki (translator of Laurence Sterne’s Sentimental Journey) and his wife Aleksandra Potocka née Lubomirska by their son Aleksander. Sculptures of the count and countess appear on the sarcophagus. The canopy is decorated with gothic ogee arches and four pinnacles. The figures of four lions holding shields bearing the crests of the Potocki and Lubomirski families stand at each corner of the terrace.
