A theatre had occupied this site in Haymarket ever since the very early eighteenth century, when the first one, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, was completed in 1705. After many changes (including changes of name according to the gender of the reigning monarch), the Victorian building of 1868-69, by Charles Lee, was almost completely demolished. "The present theatre, designed in French Renaissance style by C. J. Phipps, was built in 1897 on half the site" (Weinreb et al. 393).
