Terraces at Lancaster Gate, designed by John Johnson. c.1867. [Click on images to enlarge them.]Described as "stuccoed and richly ornamented in a blend of 'English Baroque and French Mannerism'" (qtd. in Elrington), these terraces still look very smart and elegant. Johnson only designed those flanking the square; the others were by Sancton Wood (1815-86) in 1857. The development as a whole has been called "the most ambitious and siuccessful architectural achievement in Bayswater" (Weinreb et al. 473). Among the famous literary figures known to have lived in Lancaster Gate are Lytton Stratchey, who lived here as a child, and Bret Harte, who lived here from 1895-1902.
