Second only to the city of Melbourne in the Australian colony of Victoria, the city of Ballarat, distant a hundred miles inland north-west of the capital, has a population of 37,000, and is a substantial, handsomely built town, the centre of the goldfield district. It is but thirty-five years since the discovery of gold in this neighbourhood invited the first diggers to the valley of the Yarrowee and the Black Hill, which had, till then, presented scenes of loneliness and vacancy.
