The inscription reads, “Erected by the 71st Highland Light Infantry in memory of those who fell in action or died of wounds in the campaign in Eusofzai North West Frontier of India in 1863.” The Eusofzai (nowadays Yousafzai) campaign was the same as the Umbeyla campaign.
