Marion Hepworth-Dixon (1856-1936), best known as an art critic for periodicals like the Art Journal, describes this as "a spirited version of a Dalecarlian woman in the quaint dress of the Swedish province.... spontaneity, largeness, which is yet not looseness of handling, is joined to a very individual sense of beauty" (216).
