The Fisherman and the Mermaid

This sculpture has particular interest because instead of depicting a classical subject it draws upon a fairy tale, mostly likely Hans Christian Anderson's “The Little Mermaid” (1837), thus showing that by the end of the nineteenth century fairy and folk tales had become popular mythologies to supplement, if not rival, Greek and Roman myth.
