This is the design for the Sir W. James Thomas Shield for the Monmouthshire Congregational Union. It was exhibited at Jagger's Memorial Exhibition in 1935, but its whereabouts is now unknown. [Commentary continues below.]

Celtic in style, this shield shows Jesus comforting parents who are mourning over a dead child. The idea that love can overcome pain is — as Jagger explained to the County Medical Officer in charge of the commission — suggested” by the blossoming of the crown of thorns into roses (see Compton 108). The war interrupted the commission, and the model, already sent off to be cast, has not survived.
