Design for Relief

Charles Sargeant Jagger (1885-1934)

c.1911-14

Pencil

Source: McAllister 91

This is one of Jagger's early and apparently unexecuted designs. It seems to be an assumption scene, with a lifeless female figure being borne up by two young men, as her soul escapes from her body. Two other young women are present, one with hands clasped looking upwards, the other looking down but with her arms upraised in a gesture of release. There are shadowy figures at the top as well, to receive her. It has clearly been included by I. G. McAllister to illustrate the young sculptor's "series of poetical themes, showing an individual and vigorous personality" (87).
