Acording to Richard Dorment, Eliza Millard Macloghlin (1863-1928), who became Gilbert's lover, commissioned Mors Janua Vitae in 1905 as a memorial to her late-husband Edward Percy Plantagenet Macloghlin (1855-1904) (Victorian High Renaissance, p. 172). Follow the link from Eliza Macloghlin's Sir Alfred Gilbert, RA to Dorment's narration of the complex relationship of artist and patron.
